"Driver plows through crowd at South by Southwest festival, killing two" New York Times Syndicate   March 14, 2014

AUSTIN, Texas — Two people were killed and at least 23 others were injured early Thursday at the South by Southwest festival when a driver evading arrest slammed his car into vehicles, a bicyclist, and pedestrians walking along crowded streets, police said....

The Austin police chief, Art Acevedo, said officers watching for drunken drivers had tried to stop the motorist about 12:30 a.m. outside a service station near the nightclubs and other venues that were hosting events related to the annual music and technology festival.

But the driver suddenly sped off, Acevedo said, heading the wrong way down one-way Ninth Street before turning onto Red River Street, where he rammed through a police barricade and struck a moped, a bicyclist, and a taxi, in addition to hitting the pedestrians.

The driver was being chased by a police car with flashing lights and siren at the time.

After driving onto a sidewalk and striking a van, Acevedo said, the driver attempted to flee on foot before he was caught.

The man resisted arrest, police said, and the officer used a Taser to subdue him....

The second death was the bicyclist, who was visiting from the Netherlands, police said.

"Two charged in Texas party shooting" | Associated Press   November 12, 2013

HOUSTON — Two suspects have been charged in connection with a shooting at a house party in suburban Houston that killed two teenagers and injured 19 others, authorities said Monday.

Court documents indicate the deadly shooting might not have started as a result of celebratory gunfire as initially indicated by law enforcement officials. Instead it apparently began when the suspects shot at two individuals before they fired into the crowd....

I thought only Arabs and Muslims did that.

"Gun rights group rallies at Alamo

SAN ANTONIO — Several hundred gun rights activists armed with rifles and shotguns rallied Saturday outside of the Alamo in a demonstration that broke a longstanding tradition of not staging such events at the enduring symbol of Texas independence. The rally, which was peaceful, drew 300 to 400 people and an even larger contingent of police (AP)."

Who wants to raise hell with all those guns around?

"Houston woman gets life for killing a mother, taking baby" Associated Press   November 20, 2013

CONROE, Texas — A Houston woman accused of killing a mother and abducting her newborn son last year avoided a possible death sentence by pleading guilty Tuesday and accepting a sentence of life in prison without parole.

Verna McClain was awaiting trial on a capital murder charge for the April 2012 fatal shooting of 28-year-old Kala Golden-Schuchardt. Authorities said McClain waited outside a pediatrician’s office in the Houston suburb of Spring looking for a baby to kidnap. Witnesses said she repeatedly shot Golden-Schuchardt, then grabbed her three-day-old son, Keegan, from her truck and drove away.

The infant was found hours later with McClain’s sister, who told authorities McClain intended to adopt the child. Investigators and McClain’s relatives said she had a miscarriage and was desperate to find a baby to pass off as her own so her boyfriend wouldn’t leave her.

Montgomery County prosecutors had said they would seek the death penalty against McClain, 32. But Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon said Tuesday that the plea agreement was about giving Golden-Schuchardt’s family closure in the criminal case.

"Death at hotel prompts petition to make sure 911 calls get through; Child in Texas didn’t know she had to dial 9 first" by Nomaan Merchant | Associated Press   January 11, 2014

DALLAS — Kari Hunt Dunn was stabbed to death inside a Baymont Inn hotel, allegedly by her estranged husband....

Police in Marshall, about 150 miles east of Dallas, say Brad Dunn entered a room in the Baymont Inn, where Kari Dunn and their three children were. Hank Hunt said Brad Dunn took his estranged wife into the bathroom, leaving the children outside.

Detective Sonya Johnson said that as Brad Dunn began stabbing Kari Dunn, their eldest daughter tried to call for help.

Four times, Hunt said, she dialed 911. Each time, it came up with static.

Hunt said the children eventually ran into the hallway and found someone in a nearby room to call 911.

Brad Dunn would flee with their younger daughter and was arrested in a neighboring county. He is now accused of murder and being held on $5 million bond. His attorney, Scott Rectenwald, declined to comment....

"Former Texas DA gets jail over wrongful verdict" Associated Press   November 09, 2013

GEORGETOWN, Texas — A former Texas prosecutor who won a conviction that sent an innocent man to prison for nearly 25 years agreed Friday to serve 10 days in jail and complete 500 hours of community service.

Happens more than you would like to think or believe in the land of the free.

Ken Anderson also will be disbarred and fined $500 as part of a sweeping deal that was expected to end all criminal and civil cases against the embattled ex-district attorney, who presided over a tough-on-crime Texas county for 30 years.

Anderson faced up to 10 years in prison if convicted of tampering with evidence in the 1987 murder trial of Michael Morton, who wrongly spent nearly 25 years in prison. Morton was released in 2011 after DNA evidence showed he did not beat his wife to death.

It's the rule rather than the exception for AmeriKa's police, and likely always has been.

"Stricter rules for textbooks in Texas" by Will Weissert | Associated Press   February 01, 2014

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Board of Education imposed tighter rules Friday on the citizen review panels that scrutinize proposed textbooks, potentially softening fights over evolution, religion’s role in US history, and other ideological matters that have long seeped into what students learn in school.

Tension over the issue has been building for years in the second-most-populous state, where the textbook market is so large that changes can affect the industry nationwide. Critics complain that a few activists with religious or political objections have too much power to shape what more than 5 million public school students are taught....
